A Foundation Biogas for Better Life: An African Initiative has been established on February 28, 2008 in the Netherlands, to provide the Initiative with a legal basis. This allows the Initiative to sign agreements with sponsors to support the Initiative financially; to enter into agreements for the implementation of national biogas programs, such as the one for Rwanda; to support research and development and knowledge management in biogas; and; support all the components of the Initiative Business Plan 2006-2020. Until recently, this was done on an individual and ad-hoc basis with individual sponsors such as Shell Foundation, International Humanist Institute for Cooperation with Developing Countries (HIVOS), German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DGIS), Practical Action, among others. With the registration and legal status, the Initiative enters into a new phase of further professionalism, planning and further securing the implementation of the Initiative activities.
